The Royal Scotsman

When does The Royal Scotsman run?
The Royal Scotsman operates between May and October. Please refer to schedules for exact dates and departure times.

What is my sleeping accommodation like?
The Sleeping Cars provide sixteen twin and four single State Cabins, beautifully fitted out in rich parquetry, each providing a comfortable and intimate area to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery of Scotland. All cabins have lower beds, dressing table, full-length wardrobe, hairdryer, individually controlled heating, cooling ceiling fans, opening windows and cabin service call button. Beds are furnished with a feather and foam pillow, feather duvet and cotton quilted bed covers. Non-feather duvets are also available on request. Each cabin has its own private bathroom with shower, wash-basin and toilet, constant hot water, high quality toiletries and fresh fluffy, white towels every day. The train is stabled at night in a quiet siding or station so guests are assured a good night's sleep.

Are all meals included?
Yes. Table d'hôte meals are included in the fare. The choice of a full Scottish cooked breakfast or continental breakfast is available every morning in the luxury dining car or in your own cabin, while lunch and dinner can be enjoyed in the dining car. An a la carte menu is available for lunch and dinner. All alcoholic and other beverages are also included.

What is included in the journey price?
Prices include State Cabin accommodation, table d'hôte meals daily, all alcoholic and other beverages, entertainment, all sightseeing excursions as shown in the itineraries and all applicable taxes. Prices do not include insurance, gratuities for Crew members and souvenirs.

Can children travel on The Royal Scotsman?
For safety reasons, children under 12 years are not permitted on the train.

Are special meal requirements catered for?
Special diets can be accommodated with our Chef. Please ensure that you advise in advance of any allergies, food related or not, so that staff can do their best to make your journey as enjoyable as possible.

Will I be able to smoke in The Royal Scotsman?
In accordance with Scottish Law, smoking is not permitted onboard the train at any time.

What is the check-in procedure?
The Royal Scotsman departs from Edinburgh Waverley Station. Guests are asked to check-in at the GNER First Class lounge at least 40 minutes prior to departure. You will be met by a Host and members of Crew who will transfer your luggage to the train.

How much luggage can I take on board?
Cabins on board The Royal Scotsman have limited space. It is recommended that each guest travels with one suitcase and one carry-on bag. Twin State Cabins have luggage storage space under each bed which is 71cm wide and 23 cm high. Prior to boarding please attach a Royal Scotsman luggage label/tag to each piece of your luggage. If necessary, facilities may be available your hotel in Edinburgh for storage of extra luggage during your Royal Scotsman journey.

What are the dress requirements?
For daytime excursions and relaxing on board the train, casual, comfortable clothing is best. In the evening smart attire is appropriate for our formal and informal dinners.  For the formal dinners guests are encouraged to wear a tuxedo or kilt for gentleman and a cocktail dress or similar evening wear for ladies. For the informal dinners a jacket and tie is the norm for gentlemen, except at times of unusually hot weather.

Many guests like to wear a kilt for the formal dinners and The Royal Scotsman staff are able to recommend an Edinburgh based kilt hire company, who can make all the arrangements for you, including delivery to your hotel, or direct to the train (please note than an additional charge will apply).

Do I need to pay any gratuities aboard the Royal Scotsman?
Gratuities are not included in the ticket price. Whilst they are entirely at the discretion of the guests, we would suggest between 3-5% of the ticket price per person. This is discretionary, and whilst very appreciated, and shared with all the crew, it is not expected.

What is the Royal Scotsman Motor coach?
The Royal Scotsman operates its own luxury motorcoach. The coach follows the train around the country so when the train pulls into a station, the coach is already waiting to transfer guests to the visits and sightseeing opportunities.

Can The Royal Scotsman accommodate people with a disability?
The Royal Scotsman is able to accommodate passengers with slight walking difficulties but recommend that they are escorted by an able bodied passenger. Unfortunately due to the dimensions and layout of the train, it is not suitable for wheelchair bound passengers.
